What’s your collaboration style?

Lucid surveyed over 3,000 knowledge workers and found that many people crave a different approach to digital collaboration. Take this quiz to discover how you can provide the most value as a collaborative team member.

About the 2022 The Way We Collaborate Report

Lucid worked with The Harris Poll to survey more than 3,000 knowledge workers in five countries. This survey dug deep into their experiences with digital collaboration and hybrid meetings. One thing is clear: The widespread use of virtual meetings has not translated to complete satisfaction with current collaboration solutions. To put it frankly, knowledge workers desire more.

While people are generally happy with existing collaboration tools for videoconferencing and text chat, their responses indicate some real shortcomings and a lack of true enthusiasm.

Different collaboration styles

Digital collaboration impacts people in different ways, depending on their personality traits and preferred working style. Workers who prefer a more focused or personal approach to collaboration will respond differently than those who are more introverted or prefer to collaborate and communicate in more creative ways. Putting everyone in the same bucket is not a realistic or effective way to manage collaboration, and the results of our survey support this.

Our research has identified three distinct collaboration styles based on the respondents preferences. Understanding the difference in collaboration styles is important for facilitating productive, collaborative environments. Without this understanding, it becomes difficult to implement solutions and processes that allow each person to reach their highest potential.

Opportunities for improvement

Nearly everyone surveyed (90%) thinks collaborating through virtual meetings will continue for the foreseeable future, and 87% say they've become more comfortable with digital collaboration since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, more than two-thirds of knowledge workers think there is a lack of solutions to help them become efficient collaborators.

Respondents want more from their digital collaboration solutions. Problems include:

Technical issues — 63% of users in the U.S. mentioned at least one problem with current collaboration technologies.

Meetings with too many attendees, which makes engagement harder for some workers.

A lack of interactive tools — such as sticky notes, facilitation features, and collaboration apps — that will enhance collaboration.

The difficulty of keeping track of key points and action items during meetings.
